Cell Phone Policy

Takes Effect January 1st, 2026

Beginning on January 1st, 2026, the State of Ohio’s prohibition of cell phone use during the school day takes effect, and as a reminder, please read below to learn what our students and families can expect at the start of the new year at each building. Feel free to contact the ALCS with any questions.

At All Elementary Levels: During school hours, students will be required to keep the phone in the locker/ cubby or backpack and have the device turned off. If a parent needs to contact their child or a child needs to contact a parent, that communication must go through the school, and in most cases, the main office.

At Troy Intermediate: Students may have personal electronic devices on school property but may not use them during instructional time, including in the classrooms, hallways, during lessons, recess/lunch or other learning environments. Use that violates the Acceptable Use Policy, such as taking unapproved photos, recordings, non-academic social networking, texting, or accessing inappropriate content is strictly prohibited at all times.

At Learwood: Students will not be permitted to operate any personal electronic devices between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. without staff permission. First offense: Device confiscated and held in the office until the end of the day. Additional offenses: Parents pick up the devices from the office after school. Electronic devices (phones, tablets, smart watches, etc.) can be used as "technology" for instructional purposes as determined by the classroom teacher.

At ALHS: Students will be prohibited from using a cell phone or personal communication device during the school day, except during the following times:

  • When a teacher authorizes use for educational purposes during instructional time
  • During the student's lunch break
  • During study halls
  • Between classes
  • During school-related events and functions(e.g., afterschool activities, extracurricular programs)
  • During an active threat or emergency

State law permits device use, when necessary, per the student's IEP or 504 plan. If a student has a written statement from a doctor requiring the use of a cell phone to monitor health concerns, the student is permitted to use the device for that specific purpose. Violation of the policy will result in consequences that have been outlined in correspondence with the building's families.

Thank you all for your cooperation with this matter and for your continued support.
