Gamified Mathematics, Honors

Course Overview:

Gamified Mathematics is an honors level, one semester math elective. Through a heavy emphasis on project based learning, students take an introductory dive into game theory, number theory, probability, combinatorics and other math topics that come up. Students are challenged to engage in problem solving at their level within these topics.

Textbook (Title and Publishing Company): 

No text - various supplementary materials provided by instructor

Assessments: 

Students work on a series of projects, with a great deal of choice in the matter. They are encouraged to challenge themselves in a safe environment, where they will be pushed to think deeper and reach for a little more and at the same time, not be punished for their errors.

1st Quarter- 

Standards/Learning Goals:

  • Perfect Information Games - Introduction to Game Theory

    • Various Nim-style Games

    • Positional games

  • Includes math topics that prove useful for solving these games

    • Modular Arithmetic

    • Different Based Number Systems

  • Students with an interest are encouraged to do some coding in their exploration of these topics and games

2nd Quarter- 

Standards/Learning Goals:

  • Games of Chance

    • Dice Games

    • Card Games

    • Other Probability-Based Games

  • Includes a moderate dive into related math topics

    • Combinations and Permutations

    • Probability

    • Expected Value

Other Potential Topics (time permitting, student interest-guided)- 

Standards/Learning Goals:

  • Games / Problems involving a fourth spatial dimension

  • Using games (like Set) as a means of exploring higher dimensions

  • Analysis of Calendar, day of week algorithms

  • Other topics that students pull in
