Algebra 1

Course Overview:

Algebra I (9) - 2 semesters - .50 credit each semester. This class is aligned to the national Common Core Standards for Algebra I to prepare our students to compete in a college setting. This class will begin with a more in-depth look at linear functions before moving into systems of equations, quadratic functions, exponential functions, and applications. A graphing calculator (TI-83 or TI-84) is required.

Common assessments will be given among all Algebra I courses.

1st Quarter

  • Functions: Relations, Functions, Function Notation, Graphing and Interpreting Graphs
  • Inequalities: Single Variable Inequalities, Compound Inequalities, Interval Notation for Solutions Sets
  • Absolute Value Problems: Absolute Value Equations & Inequalities
  • Linear Functions: Slope, Rate of Change, Finding Equations of Lines, Graphing Linear Functions, Evaluating Linear Functions, Applications of Linear Functions, Arithmetic Sequences, Linear Regression and Correlation

2nd Quarter

  • Linear Systems: Solutions to Systems, Solving Systems by Graphing, Substitution, and Elimination
  • Applications of Linear Systems: General Applications, Distance-Rate-Time Applications, Mixture Applications
  • Linear Inequalities, Systems of Linear Inequalities
  • Absolute Value Functions with transformations
  • Polynomials: Rules of Exponents, Adding/Subtracting/Multiplying Polynomials, Degree

3rd Quarter

  • Factoring: GCF, Factor By Grouping, Factoring Trinomials, Difference of Squares
  • Graphing Quadratics: Standard Form, Vertex Form, Completing the Square, Writing a Function from a Graph, Finding Roots from a Graph and in the Calculator
  • Solving Quadratics: Factoring, Square Roots, Completing the Square, Quadratic Formula, Discriminant, Simplifying Radicals
  • Quadratic Applications: Projectile Motion, Minimums, Maximums, Zeros, y-intercepts

4th Quarter

  • Exponential Functions: Graphs, Growth, Decay, Applications, Compound Interest
  • Statistics: Measures of Central Tendency, Histograms, Standard Deviation, Bias, Skew, Weighted Mean, Box-and-Whisker Plots, IQR, Outliers and 1.5IQR Rule, Two-way Tables
  • Piecewise Functions: With Linear, Quadratic, and Absolute Value Functions, Domain & Range, Graphing, Writing Equations from Graphs
