SWAQ (speed,weightlifting, agility, quickness)

Course Overview:

This course provides students with a general understanding of speed, agility, quickness, and strengthening training concepts and the knowledge to help students increase performance while decreasing the risk of injury through proper training techniques. This course focuses on improving speed, change of direction, improving reaction time, and increasing strength which is made possible through proper training strategies.  Students should generally plan to train for power and strength three times per week and speed/agility/quickness twice.  Training activities will be reasonably challenging for all but modified to the individual student as needed.

Assessments: 

Health and Wellness booklet and Quiz 1+2 (for first time PE students only) 

Students will also take quizzes or review worksheets during the course periodically to go over the various topics talked about during the semester. 

During the semester students will perform 8 physical tests (Dips, pushups, goblet squats, 20 yard dash, pro-agility, chinups, planks, and vertical) during the beginning, middle, and end of the semester to see their physical growth and development during the class. 

Students also take an exam at the end of the semester to assess their knowledge. This exam will be 2 parts, and a study guide will be provided.   

Students will randomly select six exercises to demonstrate. All potential exercises were listed on the workout program during the semester. Students will also be required to demonstrate a SWAQ barbell lift, citing two critical cues for the performance technique.

 Students will complete a written exam (13 short answer questions).  Exam questions will pertain to important information learned throughout the semester. 

A study guide will be given to each student the week prior to the exam.  The class will review possible questions that will be included within the exam.

1st Quarter- 

  • The first 2-3 weeks are going over safety, etiquette, and having students perform pre-assessments tests. 

  • The first time PE will also be going over the Health and Wellness booklet and taking quiz 1+2. After students will be placed into their weightlifting program which they will do on days we are in the weight room ( monday, wednesday, friday). Then on days we are not in the weight room students will train speed and agility in the gym.  

  • This quarter's focus is on form and technique in jumping and lifting.  

  • Pre-assessments (8 physical tests)  

  • Health and wellness booklet and Quiz 1+2 (for first time PE students only)

  • Weight room safety and etiquette 

  • Barbell lifts 

  • Change of direction

  • Triple extension 

  • Vertical jumping

2nd Quarter- 

  • Students will continue their workout programs going into the 2nd quarter along with working on speed and agility. This quarter will be focused on getting stronger, faster, and working on setting attainable goals.  

  • Middle- assessments (8 physical tests)

  • Sprinting/ starting position 

  • Progressive overload
