Kindergarten Vocal Music

Course Overview:

Students follow a Kodaly-based curriculum, focused on developing basic musical knowledge. Students will develop a love of singing, with the goal of singing in tune alone and with others.

1st Quarter - Finding our Singing Voice

  • Vocal Exploration
    • 4 voices (whisper, talk, shout, sing)
    • High and Low
  • Steady Beat
    • Students will begin to demonstrate an awareness of keeping the beat

2nd Quarter - Keep the Beat

  • Steady Beat
    • Students will show proficiency keeping a steady beat using physical movement
    • Students will track the beat given a visual aid
  • Performance Skills
    • Group singing, riser etiquette, following a conductor’s cues

3rd Quarter - Opposites

  • Large work study: “Carnival of the Animals”
    • Students will move purposefully to recorded music
    • Students will use musical vocabulary to describe music
  • Loud/soft

4th Quarter - Patterns

  • Large work study (continued): “Carnival of the Animals”
  • Form
    • Recognize same and different musical sections
    • Recognize patterns in music
    • Label form using visual representations (apples, bananas, cherries)

    • Show and identify shake/hit/rub
