Course Description/Objectives:

  • Students will be able to comprehend concepts related to promoting wellness and disease prevention.

  • Students will be able to demonstrate health literacy and promote health advocacy.

  • Students will be able to recognize and identify health risk behaviors and be able to identify healthful alternatives.

  • Students will be able to demonstrate the ability to use interpersonal communication skills to enhance wellness and to build and maintain healthy relationships.

  • Students will be able to recognize the importance of goal setting and decision makin to enhance overall wellness.

Because there is nothing more basic to our lives than the development and maintenance of overall wellness, this course will touch on all dimensions of wellness.  The four dimensions of wellness are:

  • Physical wellness:  a dimension of health that involves your body, including physical fitness and the ability to cope with everyday physical tasks

  • Emotional wellness:  a dimension of health that involves your emotions, mood, outlook on life and beliefs about yourself

  • Intellectual wellness:  a dimension of health that involves your ability to think clearly and critically, learn, and solve problems

  • Social wellness:  a dimension of health that involves your communication skills, relationships, and ability to interact with others

Assessments

Each chapter will conclude with a chapter assessment.  In addition, frequent lesson quizzes will be administered.  

Homework will consist of vocabulary terms and occasionally small projects.

Speakers/Supplement to Textbook

Health 10 will employ the use of outside resources(in the form of speakers) to supplement the students’ educational experience.  The speakers are trained to present materials that relate to an individual’s overall health experience.

Subject matter of the speakers includes but may not be limited to:

  • Internet crimes against children

  • Human trafficking

  • Teenage depression/suicide(state mandated subject matter)

  • Teenage dating violence(state mandated subject matter)

  • Stress management

  • Continuum of abuse(LCDA)

  • Understanding and Avoiding Hazardous Substances - Chapters 10 - Alcohol & 11 - Medications and Drugs

  • Nutrition of Food Choices - Chapter 3 - Nutrition

2nd Quarter Subjects

  • Diseases and Disorders - Chapters 12 - Infectious Diseases, Chapter 13 - Sexually Transmited Infections and HIV/AIDS, & Chapter 14 - Noncommunicalble Diseases
