Elementary Art
Course Overview:
This course is designed as an introduction to the photograph as a vehicle of artistic expression. Students will explore the history of the Photographic Arts, the development of the camera and study the influences of master photographers and contemporary photographic artists. In the darkroom, students learn to chemically process black and white film and develop enlarged prints. The enlarger is used to create timed exposures with proper f-stop and contrast settings. Students will learn and experiment with printing techniques. *Students need a 35mm manual SLR film camera – new or used.

First Quarter
Students will know/learn:
- Basic history of Photography
- Pinhole camera (aperture, shutter speed, and exposure)
- Contact printing the positive image
- Photograms and basic composition
- Elements of art/principles of design/ Rule of thirds
- Overview of the SLR camera and camera function
- Exposing film/camera exposure, film development
- Enlarging the negative (making the print)
- Criticism of famous artworks (4 parts to an artwork: subject, content, context, form)

Second Quarter
Students will know/learn:
- Leading lines and diagonals for composition
- Depth of field
- Print control: dodging/burning the print
- Contrast control in the print
- Portraiture and basic lighting
- Blurring and freezing action/motion
- Continuing art history-related enrichment
- Semester Slides Student Portfolio: Visual Journal of Student’s Work Pt. 2
- Creating a final art portfolio and critique of a final/semester portfolio
