Digital Photography

Course Overview:

Digital Imaging is an introduction to creating and working with digital photographic illustration and the digital photographic image. Students will learn various digital processes, software and technology. Students will learn digital art production techniques such as: digital image capture, output and competent use of the imaging industry’s standard program Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. Students will create and manipulate black and white and color photographs through standard and experimental processes including photographic illustration using Adobe Illustrator. Students will be exposed to the history of Digital Art and contemporary concepts, technology issues and current practicing artists in conjunction with their own digital photography. Students will engage in the critique of their own work and those of others through written and oral discussions as a class and as individuals. *Students must provide their own digital camera.

1st Quarter- 

Students will know/learn: 

  • Basic history of Digital Photography

  • Digital Photograms:  Use of the scanner and selections

  • Adobe Photoshop:  History and basics

  • The Pixel 

  • Selections:  Tools, techniques, transformations, and saving/loading, alpha channel

  • elements of art/principles of design/ Rule of thirds

  • Overview of the DSLR camera and camera function

  • Camera exposure, film development

  • Basics levels, curves, and exposure adjustments

  • Triptych/Diptych Photography

  • Editing in color:  RGB and all color correction/adjustments

  • Criticism of famous artworks (4 parts to an artwork: subject, content, context, form)

2nd Quarter-

  • Layers and layer masks

  • Image Adjustments:  All of them

  • Quick Mask

  • Channels and Harrison Shutter Effect

  • 360 degree manually stitched panorama

  • Print control: dodging/burning the print

  • Contrast control in the print

  • RAW exposure and editing

  • Blending Modes

  • Continuing art history-related enrichment

  • Semester Slides Student Portfolio:  Visual Journal of Student’s Work Pt. 2

  • Creating a final art portfolio and critique of a final/semester portfolio
