News - Important Information from the Nurse

Published on

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We are writing to inform you that we have had a slight increase of reported cases of head lice in the building. We are, however, hearing about an increase of unreported lice cases at Redwood.  While lice is not an uncommon occurrence in school settings, we want to take every precaution to ensure the health and comfort of all our students and families.

What You Should Know:

  • Head lice are tiny insects that live on the human scalp and are spread primarily through direct head-to-head contact.
  • They do not carry disease and are not a sign of poor hygiene.
  • Common symptoms include itching of the scalp and the presence of small, white eggs (nits) near the base of the hair shaft (about an inch from the scalp).

What You Can Do:

  1. Check your child’s hair and scalp daily for the next two weeks, especially behind the ears and at the nape of the neck.
  2. If you find lice or nits, apply a lice-killing hair product.  These are available over-the-counter or by a doctor.  You can also seek out professional services in Lorain County.
  3. Remove nits if found.
  4. Avoid head-to-head contact and discourage the sharing of hats, brushes, and other personal items.
  5. Treat the environment such as washing and drying clothing and bedding, as well as vacuuming of carpets and upholstery.

Reporting Cases:

Children with head lice and/or nits are kept out of school until properly treated.  After treatment, when your student is louse and nit-free, please contact the school to set up an appointment to be checked by the nurse for re-admittance. Avon Lake City School District has a no-nit policy-meaning your child cannot come back to school until all nits are gone from the hair. Please do not hesitate to notify your child’s school as all reported cases are kept confidential.  It is also recommended to notify the parents of your child’s recent playmates. Parental cooperation will help to protect all children, including your own.

We appreciate your cooperation in keeping our school community healthy. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact the school nurse or main office or visit the district web site for additional information using the following link.  https://www.avonlakecityschools.org/health/

Thank you,
