School Social Work Services
Kristin Acton, MSW, LSW – District School Social Worker (440) 933-6290 ext 1500
Avon Lake City Schools is now staffed by a District-wide School Social Worker. Our School Social Worker has a Master’s Degree in Social Work from Youngstown State University. In addition, she has certification to be a school social worker through the Ohio Department of Education, and is a licensed social worker through the Counselor, Social Worker, and Marriage and Family Therapist Board of Ohio. Ms. Acton has over six years of experience working with children, adolescents and families in Lorain County.
School Social Workers are the link between home, school, and community in providing services to students, families and school personnel to promote and support students' academic and social success. They enhance the school district’s ability to meet its academic mission, especially where home, school and community collaboration are essential in ensuring that every student succeeds.
Situations such as academic struggles, emotional concerns, or behavioral issues can cause stress on students and their families. Social workers work with school staff and families to resolve social, emotional, and behavioral problems. We do this through assessment, consultation with school staff and community providers, through development and implementation of schoolwide programs that promote social/emotional health, and providing indirect and direct services.
Ms. Acton works closely with Pupil Services personnel, building principals, school counselors, and outside agencies to ensure that students and families receive the support and services they need to be successful.
