Math Analysis

Course Overview:

Math Analysis is a senior math course devoted to discrete math, elementary probability, and an introduction to Calculus with applications to business and life sciences. A graphing calculator is required (TI-84, approximate cost: $100-$110). Prerequisite: Pre-Calculus and permission of the instructor. This class meets one period daily for ½ unit of credit each semester.

Lial et al: Mathematics with Applications in the Management, Natural, and Social Sciences

Online/Supplemental Materials:

Desmos, Delta Math

Assessments: 

A variety of assessments will be given, as well as one or two major projects.

1st Quarter- 

Standards/Learning Goals:

  • Unit 1: Algebra Review

  • Unit 2: Equations, Inequalities, and Graphs; Includes some review from prior courses as well as mathematical modeling and some other applications, like income taxes

  • Unit 3: Linear and Quadratic Functions and Applications; includes modeling and other applications like freefall, business applications (like cost, revenue, profit), and supply and demand

2nd Quarter- 

Standards/Learning Goals:

  • Unit 4: Exponential and Log Functions and Applications; includes modeling and various advanced exponential/log applications

  • Unit 5: Mathematics of Finance; includes further applications of exponentials, annuities; loan amortizations

  • Unit 6: Systems of Equations and Matrices

  • Unit 7: Linear Programming; includes applications

3rd Quarter- 

Standards/Learning Goals:

  • Unit 7: Linear Programming

  • Unit 8 (Ch. 11 in text): Introduction to Differential Calculus

  • Unit 9: (Ch. 12 in text): Derivatives and Applications

4th Quarter -  

Standards/Learning Goals:

  • Unit 9: (Ch. 12 in text): Derivatives and Applications (as time allows); development of the concept of a derivative; derivative rules (no trig); optimization; marginal cost, revenue, and profit; 

  • Unit 10 (Ch. 13 in text): Introduction to Integration (as time allows)
