News - Learwood Students Showcase Entrepreneurial Skills
Published on

Seventh grade Skills classes at Learwood Middle School recently demonstrated their creativity and entrepreneurial skills during presentations of their “Shark Tank” projects on Thursday, March 19, 2026. The engaging activity is modeled after the popular television show, Shark Tank on NBC and involves student-selected groups designing and creating a product that would improve the lives of others. Applying their marketing skills gained through a Lorain Couty JVS career exploration activity, students identified a target audience, price points for marketing and selling the product, marketing slogan, along with other key pieces of product information. Each group also utilized the Learwood Makerspace devices including a 3D printer, Glow Forge, TinkerCad, sublimination printer, and other tools to create an example of their product.
Student groups then presented their products before classmates in the Media Center with district teachers and staff serving as “sharks” to listen, evaluate, ask follow-up questions, and offer constructive feedback. At the conclusion of the activity, the "sharks" decided to invest their money by writing the product name on the back of their investment amount, with the winners of each class to be announced the following week. Examples of products created by students included Stream Guard which serves as a small portable water filter for hikers and other outdoor enthusiasts, the Meal Mate organizer for hot and cold lunches, Sweet Space environmentally friendly tote bag designed for students, and Cool Clips writing utensil holder which attaches to books and is made from recycled plastic.
Congratulations to our student “Shark Tank” inventors for displaying excellent collaboration, critical thinking, communication, and marketing skills!
