Learwood News - Learwood Students Win Essay Contest Sponsored by VFW Chapter
Published on
The Patriot’s Pen is an annual essay contest sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars for 6-8th grade students to showcase their patriotism as they write a 300–400-word composition following a themed prompt. Along with the entry form, students submitted an essay detailing an answer to: “How Are You Showing Patriotism and Support for Our Country” for a chance to advance to the District level. Students were encouraged to examine United States history while reflecting on their individual experiences in modern American society as they put their thoughts in writing.
Congratulations to the following three eighth grade students from Learwood Middle School who were granted scholarships at this entry level portion of the Patriot’s Pen Youth Essay contest, sponsored by the local Avon and Avon Lake VFW Chapter: Olivia Lemmerbrock, first place and winner of $500; Annie Murray, second place and winner of $300; and Devin Stout, third place and recipient of $200. These three deserving recipients will advance to the District 9 level judging in the national contest. Olivia, Anne, and Devin were selected based on their superbly and exceedingly well-written responses to this year’s themed question. More than 132,000 students participate in this exciting contest and have a chance to win a grand prize of $5,000 and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. at the national level. Congratulations once again and good luck at the upcoming District 9 competition!
