The third-grade classrooms at Eastview Elementary were recently transformed into mock operating rooms as part of a creative culminating activity for a Language Arts Unit on the Human Body. Students played the role of surgeons for the day complete with scrub gowns and caps, medical gloves, and their very own surgeon name tags. Each classroom featured five small operating room sections linked to a system of the body. Students rotated to each table to complete a related activity, which included puzzle mapping and labeling the major parts of the muscular, skeletal, and nervous systems, in addition to the human eye and ear. The list of learning activities also included a matching game where students matched the name of systems and body parts to definitions, worked together to construct 3-D versions of the brain, muscular system and skeletal system, and manipulated Play-Doh to map the muscular and/or skeletal system over top of the human body. Students had a blast applying their previous knowledge in an immersive, hands-on setting!
Prior to the operating room activity, students developed their understanding through an in-depth study of the major systems, including skeletal, muscular, nervous, digestive, and respiratory systems within the human body and how they are interconnected. Students also discussed the parts of the human ear and eye and how they are connected to the various systems. Reading comprehension strategies and skills were integrated throughout the entire unit. Congratulations to our third-grade students at Eastview for their terrific effort and dedication to the learning process. Finally, thank you to the third-grade teachers at Eastview, including Kristin Feronti, Amy Bohm, Renee Delotel, and Cheryl Roof for providing students with a creative, impactful, and fun learning experience!
