Erieview Kids in the Community, an outreach group comprised of K-4 students, conducted a Food Drive during the first two weeks of November to benefit Avon/Avon Lake Community Resource Services. Kids in the Community, or KIC for short, meet throughout the school year and its goal is to teach students to be kind, helpful citizens while providing opportunities to serve the greater community. The group is led by Erieview Elementary music teacher/choir director Mrs. Kathy Walker and teacher Mrs. Patricia Forte. This outreach involved students in each class contributing donations to the food drive and tallying up the donations by classroom. The classes kept tally by tens and a paper turkey was posted for each increment inside the walls of the school building.

On Monday, November 18th, students, and parent volunteers sorted and weighed all the donations from the food drive. A grand total of 4,370 food items were collected, weighing a whopping 3,809.75 pounds! The winning class with the most donations belongs to Mrs. Rados, and her students will be rewarded with having the opportunity to silly string Principal Mrs. Isaly-Johns next week before Thanksgiving break. Many Erieview students demonstrated initiative and entrepreneurial skills by collecting donations from their neighborhood for this worthy cause and deserve to be commended. Every class rallied together and collected at least around one hundred items!

Erieview students unload a box from a truck and carry into a food pantry

On Tuesday, November 19th, a group of third and fourth grade students along with volunteers loaded the boxes of donated goods onto a truck. The group of students and parents then took a field trip to CRS to unload and organize the collected donations at the food pantry. Altogether, the nearly two tons of donated food items will help to meet the needs of the community until February 2025. Thank you to the entire Erieview Elementary community including students, parents, and staff for their hard work and incredible generosity on behalf of the Avon and Avon Lake communities. A special thank you to Mrs. Walker and Mrs. Forte for organizing this impactful outreach opportunity for students which helps foster a spirit of collaboration to usher in the season of giving.
