ALCS Leaders Advocate at Ohio State House

Officials from the Avon Lake City Schools recently visited the Ohio State House in Columbus, Ohio, to engage in a kind and interactive conversation with local lawmakers who represent our constituency in the capital. During a recent cold temperature day when school was cancelled, ALCS team members Ned Lauver, Katrina Muzingo, and Maria Gingo comprised the delegation who was intent on sharing viewpoints on current student needs relative to the proposed budget bill. Legislation regarding the Fair School Funding Plan was part of the discussion, and a meaningful dialogue with Representative Joe Miller and State Senator Nathan Manning took place. In all, time spent with our local elected officials, exchanging perspectives on their actions that impact our district and others, proved to be a worthwhile endeavor. Thank you to our elected leaders for making the time to meet with our team.

The second quarter final competition of the Scholastic Games radio quiz show on WEOL (AM930 and FM 100.3) concluded with a victory for Avon Lake High School over Brookside High School. The win advances the Avon Lake team to the program’s semifinals to be broadcast in May. Competing for ALHS were Britta Sevcik, Madeline Waggoner, and team captain Dylan Missal, who won the program’s “Standout Scholar” award, an honor presented each week to the student who contributed the most to his or her team, as determined by scorekeepers. When the team competed in the first round of competitions, ALHS student Alex Chmiel won the award. He was unable to compete in the quarterfinal, but Dylan most ably compensated for his absence.
