Q & A Transportation

Q My child is going into 5th grade (new to Troy) or 7th grade (new to Learwood). I would like him/her to have a bus stop.

A All students rolling over from one school to another (elementary to Troy OR Troy to Learwood), will be assigned to a bus stop.

Q I haven’t received notification of my student(s) bus stop information?

A We do not mail student bus information home. Please refer to the Schools Transportion page of the website for the AM & PM bus routes. They are usually posted a week or so before the start of school. The Transportation tab can be found under “Departments” and then “Operations”. All student(s) receive a bus stop if they are not located in the Walk Zone for their school. Find your street on the route and have your student(s) go to the stop that is closest to your home.

Q I heard that all Kindergarten students receive a Home stop?

A Not all kindergarteners receive a home bus stop. In the AM and PM, kindergarten students are at the bus stop with all of the other Elementary students that live nearest to the bus stop. For half-day kindergarten students going home or getting picked up at the midday time, we do try to place the stop at the child’s home. However, if there are two students that live within 3 to 5 houses apart, we will place that stop at a midway point for both students so that the bus is only stopping 1 time.

Q My student is in kindergarten and I cannot be at the corner due to my infant child at home. Can you please drop him off without seeing me at the bus stop?

A Yes, but please put something in writing for the driver to keep with her route sheet telling them that this is okay with you, the parent. Or if you want the driver to let your child off, If the garage door is open or if the front door is open etc., put this in a note for the driver. Otherwise, the driver will continue on with the route, keeping your child on the bus and you will have to call the bus garage to make arrangements for pick-up.

Q I live on Lake Road (or a busy street), will my student have to cross the street?

A In grades Kindergarten through 6th grade, we will NOT cross students on busy streets in the morning, such as Lake Road/Rte 83/Walker Road. We try to avoid crossing students on these busy streets but in the afternoon there are times that this cannot be avoided as the driver is heading to their next school. The drivers will teach students how to cross safely.

Q I want my student to wait in the house or my car at the bus stop when it is raining/bad weather and my student(s) bus driver is getting after my child for not being at their “place of safety” when the bus arrives.

A Your child may wait in the car or the doorway BUT students should be able to see the bus coming and they MUST be at that “place of safety” when the bus arrives at the bus stop. This is a “State of Ohio” bus safety rule as the driver must see and count the students that are waiting at the stop as they arrive. Also, if there is a SUB bus driver working that day, they would not be aware that your child is waiting inside the door of their home or your car and they may miss picking up your child.

Q My student(s) goes to a private residential daycare, can the bus pick-up or drop-off at this location?

A Only if that residential address is in the Elementary district of the school that your child attends.

Q Avon Lake is off due to inclement weather but Bay Village is still in school, will you still bus our St. Raphael student? (or any other private schools)

A If Avon Lake is off due to inclement weather, we DO NOT transport any students. If any of the schools in Avon Lake are off due to ex; “No Electricity”, “COVID”, “preplanned day off” etc., we will still transport our Private Schools if they are in session.

Q I need my child to be transported to a Commercial Daycare in Avon Lake on Monday and Tuesday afterschool but home afterschool on Wednesday through Friday, is this okay?

A No, we only transport to the same location after school each day. Ex; Kiddie Academy, 5 days/week or Home 5 days/week. AM is okay because we know where the student is going (the students school). In the afternoon, this allows for the possibility of an error by dropping a student off at home, when they were supposed to go to the daycare, which would not be good.

Q My child goes to Primrose Daycare in Avon, can you bus them there?

A No, we only transport to the Commercial Daycare’s located in Avon Lake. (List of Commercial daycares are listed on the Transportation Page)

Q The winter weather is going to be coming soon, can we have my child’s bus stop changed to my house because the neighbors do not shovel their sidewalks?

A No, we cannot change the bus stop due to the snowy weather. The City ordinance states that residents are supposed to keep their sidewalks clear. (For students, mail carriers etc.) Make sure your student(s) is prepared for the weather with proper footwear. Drivers may make adjustments to stops if there are big Snow Mounds at the “Place of Safety”.

Q The Bus stop is kind of far for my Troy/Learwood student, can we have a closer bus stop?

A Not always, Troy student(s) bus stop may not be as close as the Elementary bus stop as they are getting older and the buses have many more students to pick-up & drop-off. Learwood bus stops can be further than Troy stops as the buses are very limited on the amount of time needed to pick-up & dropoff Learwood students (approx. 20 minutes). State Law is that bus stops may be as far as 1/2 mile away from home but we try to make stops as close as possible to residence.

Q My student lives across the street from the Bus Stop, where should we wait for the bus?

A If the bus stop is located at 399 Street Name and you live at 404 Street Name, you would wait at the address directly across the street from the scheduled bus stop on your resident side of the street. The driver will teach your child to cross the street by lowering his/her hand in the window when it is safe to cross. The States code is as such: Each pupil shall be assigned a designated place of safety on the residence side of the roadway on which the vehicle is scheduled to stop. Driver must account for each pupil at designated place of safety before leaving. Pupils are not to proceed to their residence until the school bus has departed.

Q My son’s friend would like to ride the bus home with him today for a playdate or to work on a school project with him, is this okay?

A No, the district does not allow student(s) to ride home on the bus with other bus riders. This is because most buses are full and student(s) have assigned seating. In the event of an emergency for the occasional issue that may arise, the parent of both students involved should reach out to the school Secretary or the Transportation Department for special permission.

Q I have a preschool aged student going to the LEAPS program as a Peer, can my child be bussed?

A No, we do not bus preschool students unless they are attending under an IEP. Unfortunately, we have had families that have 1 child on an IEP and 1 child going as a Peer and we can only bus the child on the IEP and not the sibling attending as a Peer. The State does not give funding for the PEER Student(s)
