AP Calculus BC

Avon Lake City Schools

Curriculum Framework

AP Calculus BC

Course Overview:

Calculus BC is a full year college course in the calculus of functions of a single variable. The content of Calculus BC is designed to qualify the student for placement and credit in a course that is one course beyond that granted for Calculus AB. It is comparable to two full semesters of a college calculus sequence. The accelerated pace of Calculus BC makes it more challenging than Calculus AB. A graphing calculator is required (TI-84, approximate cost: $100- $110). Prerequisites: Pre-Calculus or Pre-Calculus Honors and recommendation of the instructor. This class meets one period daily for ½ unit of credit each semester. FEE: AP® Exam $97.

Textbook (Title and Publishing Company):

Content/Topics/Learning Goals

Subject to Pacing and Schedules

1st Quarter-

Standards/Learning Goals:

  • Unit 1: A review of functions - in the interest of time and to best align with the official AP CED for AP Calculus, this unit is no longer being covered separately; instead, important elements are being woven in as needed to the rest of the course.

  • Unit 2: Limits and Continuity

  • Unit 3: Introduction to Differentiation

2nd Quarter-

Standards/Learning Goals:

  • Unit 3: Introduction to Differentiation, continued

  • Unit 4: Applications of Differentiation (Including Parametric Functions)

  • Unit 5: Integration (Includes more techniques than the AB course)

3rd Quarter-

Standards/Learning Goals:

  • Unit 6: Areas and Volumes (Including Polar Functions and Parametric Applications)

  • Unit 7: Differential Equations (Including Logistic Models and Euler’s Method)

  • Unit 8: Infinite Series
