Redwood second graders hold up paper dragon puppets

Second grade classrooms at Redwood Elementary took a hands-on approach to learning as part of a recent unit in knowledge on Early Asian Civilization. Across fourteen lessons, students explored the geography, history, religion, and culture of early India and China. The in-depth study included learning about the importance of the Indus and Ganges Rivers, exploring the basic beliefs of Hinduism and Buddhism, and discovering how contributions from ancient Chinese civilization continue to influence our lives today. The unit culminated with a special celebration of Chinese culture and traditions which included students rotating through various activity centers. From practicing Chinese calligraphy and writing Chinese numbers to using chopsticks and studying the twelve animals of the Chinese Zodiac, the students had a blast making real-world connections to the content area. Each class also had the opportunity to create their own dragon puppets and received a fortune cookie as a special take-home treat. Excellent job by all participating students and a special thank you to our second-grade teachers at Redwood for organizing this engaging and creative learning experience!
