News - Adulting 101 Course Teaches Important Life Skills
Published on

Avon Lake High School students are learning important practical life skills through hands-on activities thanks to a new course introduced at the start of the 2026-2027 school year. The Adulting 101 course is not your typical classroom experience as students are taught with a unique blend of direct instruction led by teacher Mrs. Melissa Hoffman and hands-on application of specific skills that students will use in everyday life. During the course, students will cover units related to laundry, cooking, and home maintenance, as well as other areas such as communication and responsibility, time management and organization, and personal finances which includes how to file taxes. A unit titled Life After High School will help students gain an understanding on home buying, insurance, career readiness, and other responsibilities they will encounter after graduation.
After completing an introductory unit and communications unit, students practiced their time management skills by tracking their energy in real time and learning how to properly make a weekly plan with their own schedules.
In addition to promoting hands-on learning, the Adulting 101 course incorporates student feedback by providing activities that include skills that students specifically want to learn. As a result of student input, the cooking unit will include a step-by-step process on how to cook rice. The unit will also provide an overview of how to cook simple dishes such as scrambled eggs in addition to learning about food safety, selecting foods, reading recipes, learning the different types of kitchen tools, formal dining and more. During a recent learning activity, students made homemade “brookies” which is a delicious combination of cookie and brownie dough baked together.
For the laundry unit, students will learn how to hand sew and attach buttons, steam and iron clothing, understand laundry labels, the different types of stains and the best ways to remove them, and other related information. Home maintenance repairs will cover a wide range of tasks including patching holes in drywall, fixing a leaky faucet or pipes, properly painting walls, unclogging a drain, and learning how to use various tools.
By incorporating hands-on learning and identifying student areas of interest and need, the Adulting 101 course is helping our Avon Lake High School students to approach their futures with a sense of confidence and preparedness!
