Learwood seventh graders combined creativity, product development, and marketing as part of the annual Shark Tank career exploration class project whereby groups of students assembled over the past several weeks to create a prototype of a product that will serve a useful purpose for others. This annual project prompts excitement, ideas, thoughtfulness, and an eye on students’ respective futures. Creative examples on display during this year’s Shark Tank exercise included a locker grip, a portable candy dispenser, and pairs of shoes that get bigger as a young person grows. Over the course of several weeks, participating students were required to develop a cost, a target audience, a slogan, and advertisement, a fictional website, and product logo as part of the project. Once fully developed, student groups presented to adult ‘sharks’ consisting of staff and members of the community that listened to presentations, asked questions, and discussed amongst themselves to decide upon which products to invest in. In all, this career exploration initiative is cleverly cloaked with the theme of the popular television show, ‘Shark Tank,’ and involves our very own students, their ideas, and community involvement. Great work, Learwood seventh graders!
