News - Project Lorax Jr. Launches at Learwood

Learwood Middle School recently introduced a new program that will help students with special needs learn important vocational, life, and social skills in an engaging and creative format. Named after the popular children’s book, The Lorax by Dr. Seuss, Operation Lorax Jr. enables students to learn various skills through potting and caring for hardy and adaptable plants. The new Learwood initiative is a smaller version of a successful full-scale plant program at Avon Lake High School and follows the launch of an identical program at Troy Intermediate School two years ago.
With the assistance of teachers and staff, participating students carefully potted the plants and delivered them to participating classrooms located throughout the school. Students will visit each classroom on a weekly basis to feed and water each plant and record their tasks on a checklist. In doing so, students will gain confidence and build important skills such as attention to task and detail, following directions, sequencing steps to complete tasks, problem solving, using appropriate and expected social behaviors, and more. Participating students have taken immense pride and care with their weekly caretaking services. A special thank you to the Learwood teachers and staff for their organization and support of this impactful student learning initiative.
