The Educational Service Center of Lorain County (ESCLC) hosted school districts from across the county to “showcase knowledge, teamwork, and confidence in action” in The Lorain County Middle School Academic Challenge on November 12th. Six teams from Avon Lake, Elyria, Firelands, Sheffield Lake, Oberlin, and Columbia Station gathered at the Lodge of New Russia Township in Oberlin for a day of lively competition, testing their academic knowledge, and quick thinking under pressure. Teams competed in the 5th /6th or 7th/8th grade category. Congratulations to our Troy Intermediate School Academic Challenge team as they won first place among the 5th/6th graders!

The lineup for the Troy Intermediate team boasted Kaveh Shahmir, Bryce Ferguson , Skye Ferguson, Annie Wells, Lillian Youssef, Leah Walker, Tejas Marathe, Amelia Waggoner, Amelia Springer, and Jahnavi Patel. These bright and motivated students were selected from among their peers who met with advisor and 6th grade math teacher Mrs. Pam Geraci for two weeks to practice. At the conclusion of this rigorous preparation, a test was given to all students, and Mrs. Geraci selected the top 10 for the team based on the results. Mrs. Geraci enjoyed working with this dedicated group of students who were both eager to learn and embraced the sometimes demanding process of the competition. The students’ excitement was palpable and they were eager to compete at a higher level. While a state-level event is not yet available for 6th grade students currently, this fact does not detract from the students’ phenomenal achievement, and their demonstration of collaboration, dedication, teamwork, and academic excellence is to be celebrated!
