Content Overview: 

Students build foundational science habits by observing, asking questions, investigating, using simple models, and communicating evidence. Core learning focuses on living things and their environments, pushes and pulls, weather patterns, sunlight, and simple engineering design. The K–2 engineering design standards (K-2-ETS1-1 through K-2-ETS1-3) are addressed throughout the year as students identify simple problems, develop possible solutions using drawings or models, and test and compare solutions to determine what works best.

TCI Unit Checkpoints and Performance Assessments; investigation/journal work; teacher observation and science talk; student drawings/models and oral explanations; NGSS-designed unit tests as developmentally appropriate.

 

Standards/Learning Goals 

Unit 1 Plants and Animals 

  • K-LS1-1 — Observe patterns in what plants and animals need to survive.

  • K-ESS3-1 / K-ESS2-2 — Use models and evidence to connect organisms’ needs to where they live and explain how living things can change their environment.

  • K-ESS3-3 — Communicate simple solutions that reduce human impact on land, water, air, and living things. 

Unit 2 Pushes and Pulls 

  • K-PS2-1 — Plan and conduct investigations comparing the strength and direction of pushes and pulls.

  • K-PS2-2 — Analyze observations/data to decide whether a design changes an object’s speed or direction as intended.

  • K-2-ETS1 — Ask questions, sketch, build, test, and improve a simple solution to a motion problem

Unit 3 Weather

  • K-ESS2-1 — Observe, record, and share local weather conditions to identify patterns over time.

  • K-PS3-1 — Observe and compare how sunlight warms Earth’s surfaces.

  • Science Practice — Use simple weather data, pictures, and words to communicate patterns and predictions.
