Content Overview: 

Students investigate plant needs and biodiversity, classify and test materials, and develop models and explanations of Earth’s surface and water. Instruction emphasizes observable evidence, comparison of solutions, and the K–2 engineering design standards.

Standards/Learning Goals 

Unit 1 Plant and Animal Survival 

  • 2-LS2-1 — Plan and conduct an investigation to determine whether plants need sunlight and water to grow.

  • 2-LS2-2 — Develop a model that mimics how animals pollinate plants or disperse seeds.

  • 2-LS4-1 — Observe and compare the diversity of plants and animals in different habitats.

Unit 2  Materials and Their Uses 

  • 2-PS1-1 —Describe and classify materials by observable properties.

  • 2-PS1-2 — Analyze test data to determine which materials are best suited for an intended purpose.

  • 2-PS1-3 / 2-PS1-4 — Use evidence to explain how objects can be taken apart/rebuilt and which heating/cooling changes can or cannot be reversed.

Unit 3 Earth’s Surface 

  • 2-ESS1-1 — Use multiple sources to provide evidence that Earth events can happen quickly or slowly.

  • 2-ESS2-1 — Compare solutions designed to slow or prevent wind or water from changing the land.

  • 2-ESS2-2 — Develop a model of the shapes and kinds of land and bodies of water in an area.

  • 2-ESS2-3 — Obtain information about where water is found on Earth and whether it is solid or liquid.

  • K-2-ETS1 — Define an erosion-related problem, build or represent solutions, and compare how well they work.
