Avon Lake High School is celebrating junior Ava Molina, 17, one of 72,000 students from across the country who recently earned academic honors from College Board’s National Recognition Programs. She received an award from the National Hispanic Recognition Award (NHRA). The National Recognition Programs honor the strong academic achievements of underrepresented students. The programs not only benefit students, they also benefit colleges looking to recruit diverse talent.

The criteria for eligible students includes:
* GPA of 3.5 or higher
* PSAT/NMSQT or PSAT 10 assessment scores that are within the top
*10% of assessment takers in each state for each award program or earned a score of 3 or higher on 2 or more AP Exams in 9th and 10th grade
* Attend school in a rural area or small town, or identify as
African American/Black, Hispanic American/Latino, or Indigenous/Native

Eligible students are invited to apply during their sophomore or junior year and are awarded honors the following school year. At the same time, colleges and organizations using College Board’s Student Search Service™ can connect directly with awardees during the recruitment process.

“It’s very cool to be able to see hard work pay off,” said Molina. “To be in the top percentage of test takers is really cool, too. I was very excited to receive an award and it made me feel pretty special.”
In addition to her academics, Molina is also involved in orchestra and gymnastics at Avon Lake High School. She also coaches gymnastics.

“It is through Ava’s exceptional academic focus she earned recognition in the College Board’s National Recognition Programs,” said Michael May, Avon Lake High School principal. “This sets a strong standard for all of our future aspiring College Board scholars. It also helps to display the strong commitment to our high school’s educational culture.”
