Studies in the Novel

Course Overview:

This semester-long literature course is offered to students who are interested in learning about literature through the study of the novel. Students will improve their ability to evaluate, analyze, and write about fiction. Students will be expected to purchase several novels for the course and will need to be able to work independently and with others. This class meets one period daily for ½ unit of credit.

This course was designed for juniors and seniors who enjoy reading longer works independently. While we will pace our reading in a manageable way for all students, if you do not enjoy reading books, I strongly urge you to consider taking a different course.  Other than one independent reading book (to which you and I will agree), we will read all the books together on the same schedule. Please plan to read a maximum of 30 minutes outside of class on most days. If you are a slow reader, this time could vary, so plan your days accordingly. While the books we read are widely read in high schools in the United States some of them deal with sensitive topics and difficult issues.Furthermore, the books selected are not intended to be an endorsement of any particular social or political agenda; however, each has its own perspective. Acknowledging a perspective or bias in no way means you must agree with it. Critical thinkers should face all opinions including those with which they might disagree.

The books in this class wade into waters some may find controversial. So, with that in mind, if you are or might be offended by the content in the selected books, you should consider taking a different course. Again, this is an elective course and you’re free to sign up for another class for your English credit if you wish.
