News - Important Update from Avon Lake City Schools

Dear Avon Lake Community,

We hope this email finds you well.  During the last three weeks, we have seen a sharp rise in COVID-19 cases across the school district, city, and county.  The impact has significantly affected our ability to staff our schools with classroom teachers and support staff.  This week alone we averaged 40.5 staff absences per day with a total of 77 unfilled positions when substitutes were required (34 of those were teaching positions).  We also had to close our LEAPS preschool program due to an outbreak among staff.

After consultation with numerous stakeholders and professionals, we are making changes to the school calendar for the physical and mental health of our students and staff.  These decisions are difficult to make and we apologize for any inconveniences this causes for our district families. The health and safety of our students and staff is our utmost priority.

The school calendar changes are as follows:

    Monday, December 20, 2021

No School for Students PK-8

  • Buildings will be open during normal hours for drop-off/pick-up of personal items
  • High School students will take exams as scheduled
  • Staff Work Day

    Tuesday, December 21, 2021

No School for Students PK-8

  • High School students will take exams as scheduled
  • Staff Work Day

    Monday, January 3, 2022

No School for Students PK-12

  • Professional Development Day for Staff

    Tuesday, January 4, 2022

                                           School Resumes for All Students

This modified schedule will allow us to deal with staffing issues, and also allow us to review our COVID-19 safety protocols, as well as any potential schedule modifications as we come back from Winter Break.

Thank you for your continued support as we continue to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic and its challenges.

We wish all of you a very safe and happy holiday season. Please stay safe and well.

Sincerely,

Bob Scott, Superintendent
