Choir
William G. Zurkey has been director of choral activities at Avon Lake High School for the past 24 years. His choirs have been selected to perform at nine Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) Professional Conferences and at the Midwest Kodaly Music Educators Regional Convention in 2001. Long active in Ohio public school music, Mr. Zurkey has served OMEA as a District Honors Choir festival guest conductor, state chair for the All-State Choir (2004-06), and regional chair of the All-State Choir.
He is currently the president of the Ohio Choral Directors Association and on the ACDA Central Division Board. He has also served OCDA as Northeast Regional Chairperson, Ohio high school repertoire standards chair, and historian.
Mr. Zurkey has also served on the Ohio Department of Education curriculum writing team for the fine arts academic standards in music, and is currently an ODE Certified mentor. He has been listed in several Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers. He has also been the Director of the Senior Honors Chorale on the Baldwin-Wallace College Conservatory of Music Outreach Program and as an adjunct Faculty of Music Education at the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music where he directed the Women’s Chorale.
Mr. Zurkey holds a bachelor of music education degree from Bowling Green State University, a master of music degree from Cleveland State University, and has done additional work in doctoral studies at Kent State University.
Mr. Zurkey has also coached football at various levels for thirty years, most recently on the Avon Lake coaching staff as the Head 8th Grade Coach. He is also organist at the Bay United Methodist Church in Bay Village, Ohio. He is married to Sandy, with whom he has two children, Adam and daughter in law Casey, & Megan.
