Family and Consumer Science
Family and Consumer Science classes are designed to teach students skills they will use in every day life.
7th Grade classes cover nutrition and basic cooking. During nutrition, the 6 basic nutrients, their functions and sources are covered. Additionally, we discuss digestion and reading food labels. Students will also have the opportunity to find out how many calories they should be eating everyday and how these calories should be distributed amoung the different food groups. Skills such as measuring, recipe reading and equipment use are the focus of the cooking section. Students will complete 4 cooking labs during class. At the end of the 9 weeks, we will spend time discussing eating disorders.
8th Grade classes cover topics important for students to become smart money managers. Students will learn about identifying needs and wants, setting goals, and making good decisions. We will also discuss money issues such as budgeting, saving and using credit cards and other bank services (such as ATM/debit cards). Students will also learn skills to make them wise consumers: buying decisions, comparison shopping and evaluating advertising. Consumer rights and responsibilites will also be covered.
