CLUBS ACADEMIC CHALLENGE TEAM - The Academic Challenge Team is comprised of students in grades 9-12 who represent the school in the SWC Junior Varsity and Varsity Academic Challenge matches and tournaments. Students are also selected through an audition process to compete in the WEOL Scholastic Games Radio Competition and Channel 5 Academic Challenge TV program. Other inter-scholastic competitions are held throughout the year. Students are selected for these events based on their factual knowledge and quick recall ability. AFS CLUB - AFS Club (American Field Service) is an international/intercultural organization which promotes intercultural understanding and friendship. The club meets at least once a month for students in grades 9-12. Our activities include cultural projects, community service, social activities, fundraising, and student exchanges both international and domestic. We are also a support group for all exchange students at ALHS and all ALHS students going abroad. AFS – Changing the world one person at a time. DIVERSITY AWARENESS - The Diversity Awareness club dedicates itself to the promotion of tolerance within the school and the greater community. The club supports and advocates the views of all people, cultures, lifestyles, and ethnicities. It seeks to fulfill these goals through the action and examples set by members through various outreach activities during the year. The club also provides a safe and supportive environment for students dealing with intolerance. Toward this end the group operates a weekly support group and hosts social events for members. Visit the Diversity Awareness Group webpage at AvonLakeSchools.com/avlkhs/diversity. DRAMA CLUB - The Drama Club is open to all ages from 9th to 12th grade. All facets of “live” theatre are explored; including auditioning, acting, set designs, and make-up. Students are schooled in the effective performance of comedy, classical drama, and musicals. ENVIRONMENTAL CLUB - The Environmental Club was started to instill a better awareness of the environment and to encourage the concern for our planet Earth. For our projects we build bird and bat houses to put up around the community. We also help with recycling efforts here in the high school. FUTURE BUSINESS LEADERS OF AMERICA - FBLA is a state and national organization open to students in grades 9-12. FBLA is the largest student organization in the country. The club meets bi-monthly and focuses on preparing students for careers in the business field as well as developing leadership skills. Students are invited to compete in State Leadership Conference held annually during the month of March in Columbus Ohio. KEY CLUB - The Key Club is a service organization affiliated with the Kiwanis Club, whose purpose is to promote leadership, development, and charitable fund raising. Key Club’s service projects include serving at the Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast, participating in fund raising events for scholarships, and collecting canned food for the needy. Activities include a “lock in” slumber party and the Ohio district convention in Columbus. MATH AND SCIENCE CLUB - The Math and Science Club has been in existence at ALHS since the 1950’s. The club’s purpose is to provide its members with relevant and interesting information in the fields of Math and Science. The club is open to all students at ALHS. Each year the club provides a series of evening seminars on diverse, but specialized topics. MODEL UNITED NATIONS - The Model United Nations Study Group is open to 10th, 11th and 12th graders interested in studying foreign countries and foreign policies. The experience includes a competition at Kent State University, Ashtabula branch, where students compete with students from other schools in other states in model Security Council format. The Group also goes to Boston where experienced delegates compete at Harvard University with some of the best students from around the world. Enthusiastic students with strong verbal skills willing to put in a great deal of their own time to do research are encouraged to apply. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY - The members of the National Honor Society are selected from the Junior and senior classes using criteria based on scholarship, leadership, service and character. National Honor Society members organize a variety of activities in order to raise funds for their various projects which benefit the school and the community. Applicants qualify in the spring of their junior year by having a specified GPA of 3.65. SADD - Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) is a state and national organization for students in grades 9-12. SADD encourages students to use positive peer pressure and adopt a no use life-style in their efforts to end underage drinking, drug abuse and death due to drinking and driving. Students participate in several activities both here at the high school as well as throughout the county. SHORE LOG (Yearbook) - At the beginning of each year Shore Log Staff members develop a creative theme for presentation of the yearbook. Members then select and identify pictures, write stories for clubs and sports, and lay out pages and assemble them for production at the yearbook publishers. The yearbook staff sells advertising blocks and lays out the advertising section of the Yearbook. Staff also operates a booth at the homecoming festival to raise funds. SKI CLUB - The Ski Club of Avon Lake High School is open to any students in grades 9-12. Sign-up takes place in November prior to Thanksgiving. Members of the Ski Club ski 5 times at Brandywine Ski Resort on Saturday afternoons in January and February. Cost for this activity includes rental equipment, lessons and transportation (cost is less if you own equipment or have a season pass to the resort). All ability levels are welcome, from first timers to experts. SPANISH CLUB - The members of the Spanish club meet once a month. You should currently be enrolled in Spanish OR have completed two “successful” years. Come and join us in Salsa dancing, picnics, Adopt-a-Family, Art Museum, Movies, etc… You must attend at least four activities and three meetings per school year to be considered an active member. SPECTRUM (ALHS Newspaper) - The members of the Spectrum meet monthly for whole staff brainstorming and assigning articles. To be an editor, students must take the Journalism course, and already be involved with the paper staff. Editors: Editor-in Chief, News, Sports, Features; Reporters: Under all editors; Business Manager: In charge of getting advertising to pay for paper, setting ads and taking care of finances; Photographers; Typists. STUDENT COUNCIL - Student council is composed of any student who is interested in helping their school. This is a service oriented group that donates money and services to charity as well as awarding scholarships to ALHS students. Activities sponsored by student council include candy sales for various holidays, flower sales, walks for charity, homecoming elections, the talent show, tailgate parties and blood drives. VARSITY CLUB - This is a school service organization that is open to all Avon Lake Varsity Letter winners. Varsity Club promotes ALHS athlete involvement in school and community service activities. Through donations from services and fundraisers, Varsity Club’s goal is to reward at least 2 members with the Keith Reiber Memorial Scholarship. ATHLETIC PROGRAMS Fall Sports: - Boys/Girls Cross Country, Football, Girls Tennis, Boys/Girls Soccer, Cheerleading, Boys/Girls Golf, Girls Volleyball Winter Sports - Boys/Girls Basketball, Wrestling, Cheerleading, Boys/Girls Swimming, Boys/Girls Diving, Ice Hockey Spring Sports - Boys Baseball, Girls Softball, Boys Tennis, Boys/Girls Track & Field Concert Band - The Concert Band is comprised of all freshmen instrumental music students. This group performs at various performances throughout the year including, but not limited to, the Fall Instrumental Concert, the Holiday Instrumental Concert, the Winter Instrumental Concert, the Pops Concert, and the Commencement Ceremony. All students are encouraged to perform in the OMEA Solo and Ensemble Contests. Membership is open to any freshman student. This is a credited course and meets one period daily. Wind Ensemble - The Wind Ensemble is comprised of sophomore, junior, and senior instrumental music students. This group performs at various performances throughout the year including, but not limited to, the Fall Instrumental Concert, the Holiday Instrumental Concert, the Winter Instrumental Concert, the Pops Concert, and the Commencement Ceremony. All students are encouraged to perform in the OMEA Solo and Ensemble Contest. Membership is pending upon audition. This is a credited course and meets one period daily. Symphonic Band - The Symphonic Band represents Avon Lake’s top performing instrumental concert band. This band is comprised of sophomore, junior and senior instrumental music students. This group performs at various performances throughout the year including, but not limited to, the Fall Instrumental Concert, the Holiday Instrumental Concert, the Winter Instrumental Concert, the Pops Concert, and the Commencement Ceremony. All students are encouraged to perform in the OMEA Solo and Ensemble Contest. This is a credited course and meets one period daily. String Orchestra - The String Orchestra is an extra-curricular ensemble that meets three days a week before school from 7:00 – 7:30 a.m. It is open to students who play string instruments in grades 9-12. The group will study a variety of repertoire and will perform a minimum of two concerts, one in December and one in May. Interested students should have played a string instrument for at least 2 years, either by taking private lessons or by participating in middle school orchestra. Membership is pending upon audition, approval by the director, and/or approval by the Learwood Middle School director. Marching Band - ALHS marching band starts rehearsals in August before anyone even thinks of starting back to school. Besides performing at the weekly football games, the marching band participates in Bandaramas and other selected events. This is not a credited course. If you are interested in the marching band, contact the band director through the High School office. Jazz Band - The Jazz Band is an extra-curricular ensemble open to any High school student, grades 9-12. This band meets a minimum of once a week and rehearses from 7:00 a.m. – 7:40 a.m. The instrumentation is that of a standard “Big Band.” It is not required, but encouraged that each student be a member of one of the concert bands. Membership is pending upon audition. Pep Band - The pep Band is an extra-curricular ensemble open to any High School student, grades 9-12. This band’s performances include, but are not limited to, most of the Boys and Girls Varsity Basketball games. It is not required, but encouraged that each student be a member of one of the concert bands. Membership is pending upon audition. Chorale - Choral music has always been an important part of the musical life of Avon Lake High School. Each year the Chorale performs at the Performing Arts Center and throughout the region and the state. In the past few years, the chorale has sung with the Cleveland Pops Orchestra, and at the Ohio Music Education Association Annual Convention, Orchestra Hall in Chicago, and Carnegie Hall in NY City. The Avon Lake Chorale has toured England and Scotland for ten days and performed concerts in London, Glasgow and Edinburgh. They perform in District and State Contest at the “AA” literature level. Audition is required. Da Cantari Choir - Da Cantari was added to the schedule six years ago in response to the growing ALHS music program. The choir will begin to understand the basic physiological workings of human vocal production, be able to identify factors that constitute correct vocal production, understand the rudiments of music notation. They will also be able to sing specified assignments of music within a mixed vocal quartet. Da Cantari performs four concerts during the year and participates in District and State Contest at the “A” literature level. Audition is required. Merples - Two select quartets of Juniors and Seniors which represent the ALHS Vocal department in performances throughout Northern Ohio. They perform a Christmas and Valentine show, with Pop and Broadway in the spring. Musika Nova - This choir is open to all students pending an audition and/or approval of the director and/or the Learwood Middle School director. Both light and serious music will be performed. Students will understand breath control, vowel placement, beginning sight-singing and basic music notation. The choir performs four concerts a year and will participate in District Contest at the “C” level literature. |
